Performance underway

Through the years I have been fortunate to sail all of the current model production yachts, for thousands of miles under many different coastal and offshore conditions. While Tartan offers several Mast selections of aluminum, in-mast furling, a beneficial no charge option is the Novis Carbon spar, which drastically improves stability and comfort in big seas offshore, and with coastal choppy waves. If only all boats could have this no charge option usually found on custom mega yachts! Another advantage is the more effective solent rig which is the sail plan for every Tartan model, this allows for quick and easy head sail deployment for the variable conditions in which sailors so often find themselves. The reacher headsail can be used for off the wind or light wind sailing, while the smaller self tacking headsail can be used for upwind and heavier air sailing.      ~ Tim Ashe

The 3400
Sometimes bringing a boat from the Tampa Bay to Miami for the boat show can be exhilarating as we get into a situation of pressed for time to make it to the show, in February the cold fronts can disrupt a pleasant sail. We had 25 knots from the NE and 4-6 ft chop. Armed with a reefed main and the self tacking jib, the 3400 was in a groove beating to windward going up Hawk channel (a large navigable channel between the outer reef and the Florida Keys from Key West to key Biscayne). The self Tacking jib and reefed main were a perfect amount of sail area. Just to be able to turn the helm to tack made the trek up the channel so much easier and less taxing for the crew.

The 3700
This is the first model under 40ft Tim Jackett started to design Beamy all the way aft and what you get is a great sailing boat in all points of sail the 5 foot draft version will point 33-34 degrees apparent, and off the wind at 120 she'll surf down following seas with fantastic stability and boat speed. The 3700 CCR along with the bigger and smaller sister ships make the windward leeward sailing in the Virgin Island's so much fun again, effortless tacking into the typical east trades to Virgin Gorda then back downwind with the Reacher.

The 4000

The 4300
North Coast of Columbia, one of the 5 passages circumnavigators tell heroic stories about. After leaving Aruba en route to Cartegena we knew the winds would freshen as the Columbia coast approached. On the second night out they built up to the mid forties with steep seas, the 4300 was stiff and surfing brilliant sometimes registering 13.8 knots with a poled out blade of 100% the self tacking jib to starboard and a double reef in the main to port she was comfortable in her big sea surroundings.

The 4400
For those who like the volume of space aboard at anchorage this yacht has it. We had one in stock for only a few months I would showcase the boat by anchoring off the Vinoy Basin here in St. Pete this was the "social gathering vessel". Don't let the Deck Salon fool you this is a fast sea-kindly hull, while delivering a 4400 in the Gulf Stream with SE breeze we were done with the Florida coast in two days (nearly 400 miles).

The 4700
The 4700 offers cruising sailors who prefer the deck salon model with the ability to have the selftacking jib and reacher sail plan. A larger aft cabin and owner customization make the 4700 a great performance cruising yacht for those who want to stay under 50 feet.

The 5300
You may have seen Franks Man-cave on the Tartan web site as his hull #2 was being built, what can I say about the flagship of the fleet, Frank was looking for a heavy air but more importantly light air yacht for the South Pacific the vast South Pacific where winds from the Galapagos’s to the Marquesa's can average 5-10 knots or less, no last chance Texaco’s. In Tampa Bay while commissioning and test sailing we had a day of 3- 4knots of wind and with his cruising chute we made the big 5300 sail to 4knots of boat speed. When it came time to delivering the 5300 to her new place of mooring you could feel this yacht is ready for high seas and faraway places, I remember in conversation with Tim Jackett he said once you put the sails up if its blowing 18 knots your boat speed is going to be 9-10 knots consistently the 5300 just wants to get out and go.
